SJNCERT member Jeff Levine provides highlights of the San Jose Downtown Public Safety Town Hall meeting on August 8, 2025, at the San Jose Convention Center.
Keynote speakers were Matt Mahan, Mayor of San Jose, and Betty Duong, County of Santa Clara District 2 Supervisor.
Additionally, we heard from:
Captain Ali Miri of the San Jose Police Department,
Hugo Meza, Community Prosecutor of the District Attorney’s office,
James Gibbons-Shapiro, Assistant District Attorney,
Damon Silver from the Public Defenders’ office,
Consuelo Hernandez and Ky Le, Santa Clara County Deputy Executives.

Also in attendance was our interim District 3 City Council Representative, Carl Salas, along with Anthony Tordillos, who will be sworn in as the newly elected representative for D3 at the Tuesday, August 12th City Council session.

Special thanks to Alan “Gumby” Marques, who hosted the event.

What was this all about?

As Mayor Mahan said: “Let’s talk about what’s working, what’s not, and how we hold local government accountable for better outcomes.”

It was all about public safety in the Downtown area, but also applies to all of San Jose, as issues are not limited to arbitrary neighborhood boundaries.

It was an open and honest discussion by all of the various agencies speaking to what has worked, what hasn’t, and how we have to be creative in moving forward, addressing the critical quality of life issues in San Jose and Santa Clara County.

I’m glad I attended, and I strongly urge all of my friends and neighbors to get involved, whether it’s a local neighborhood meeting or a citywide seminar like this one. It’s up to all of us, working closely with our City and County officials, to make the Capital of Silicon Valley the most vibrant, inclusive, and safe urban center in the Country.
